The sixth annual MSU Innovation Celebration was Thursday, April 14, 2016, 4-6 p.m. in the Huntington Club on the 4th floor of Spartan Stadium.
This networking reception showcases innovative technologies and startups developed in campus labs, classrooms and beyond. We honor MSU researchers who reported an invention, licensed a technology or were awarded patents during the academic year, and recognize the winners of awards for innovation and achievement in technology transfer.
Innovation of the Year Award winner Dr. Bruno Basso is a professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at MSU. He receives this award for his methods and systems for cropland evaluation and crop growth management. Dr. Basso’s approach is to integrate diverse disciplines to understand the overall agricultural systems and to improve decision-making across a broad spectrum of stakeholders, from the smallholder farmer in the developing world to the industrial producer and policy maker at all scales.
Innovator of the Year Award winner Dr. Gemma Reguera is a professor of microbiology and molecular genetics at MSU. She receives this award for her work with biproducts from waste via microbial electrochemical reactors. Dr. Reguera’s efforts to further develop microbial electrochemical reactors to produce the polymer precursor 1,3-propanediol (PDO) using glycerin as a substitute are particularly innovative, as 1,3-PDO can be used to formulate industrial products such as composites, adhesives, laminates, and polyesters.
MSU Technology Transfer Achievement Award winner Dr. Jes Asmussen is a university distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering at MSU. He acheves this award for his work with microwave plasm machines and processes to produce synthetic diamonds. His advanced equipment is used in the deposition and growth of polycrystalline and single-crystal diamond used in industrial, scientific, and gemstone applications. Dr. Asmussen holds twenty-six U.S. and over twenty international patents in the field of microwave technology and microwave processin.
